Army Resilience Program
Currently, Shannon Peters, Director of Organizational Development and Training, is working with the University of Pennsylvania, to conduct a Resilience training program for the U.S. Army, the first of its kind in the military, to improve performance in combat and head off the mental health related problems that plague about one-fifth of troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq (New York Times, August 17, 2009). The training is based in part on the research that found that mentally disputing unexamined thoughts and assumptions often defuses them. It also draws on recent research suggesting that people can manage stress by thinking in terms of their psychological strengths. The program also includes conducting a train-the-trainer program for army personnel in leadership positions.
